Apr 18, 2008. this is an awesome movie. Lars and the Real Girl (2007) Review. Ryan Gosling performance is extra-ordinary. And here are some of those ways: It's miraculous that screenwriter Nancy Oliver was able to tell this story without being smutty, stupid, or schticky, considering that it's about a mentally unstable man who treats an anatomically correct love doll as if it is his girlfriend. It's nice to see that there are a few diamonds in the rough, with Lars and the Real Girl giving me a tremendously tiny flicker of hope that there are more American comedies out there with the same unique ideas and strong comedic timing. There would be a silly scene featuring the doll and then suddenly hit the brakes with a tearful, neurotic trip to the psychologist's office. Well, I worked with a lot of actors that just don't react!

I also have to add that this film's short running time does a lot to add to my enjoyment; if this was even 20 minutes longer, I may have even hated it, but at a little over an hour and a half, it's worth trying this film if you're curious. Critics underrated this one. We might need this movie when we feel like we've been a little too hard on ourselves and need to contemplate our strangeness in a compassionate way. Most performances are dwarfed by Gosling's, but are all good, and service a solid script. This sort of plot is hardly new, and while I think this film does a decent job executing and rehashing it, it's hardly a movie that sticks with me, or feels all too special. It occurred to me later that these not-quite-believable people might possibly populate the odd little town of St. Olaf, which Rose of "Golden Girls" was always telling quirky stories about. When Gus moves back to their snowy Midwestern hometown with his pregnant wife, Karin (Emily Mortimer), Lars moves out of the family home into the finished garage. There is very light sexual talk mainly about the nature that Bianca is a sex doll even though Lars doesn't use her like that. I really don't like the way common sense media reviewed this movie. Story: Adam, a lonely man with Asperger's Syndrome, develops a relationship with his upstairs neighbor, Beth. There are some fairly surreal scenes, which again should be expected given the story, where 'Bianca' is shown in the neighbourhood, accompanying Lars to certain places and events, such as attending a church service with him and even getting 'her' blood pressure taken. Story: A beleaguered small-business owner gets a harmonium and embarks on a romantic journey with a mysterious woman.
Paul Schneider, Emily Mortimer and Patricia Clarkson all just wonderful, as is Ryan Gosling. I recognize the originality of the theme, but if the idea was to do comedy, it failed me. It's very heartwarming and happy movie and I really loved it! Honestly, the only way I could review this film is with an audio file, microphone and a can of hormel chili. But with a great lead actor in Ryan Gosling, there's opportunity to produce a good whimsical drama with plenty of heart. In Bianca he finds a sorely needed compassionate and loving ear. Ryan Gosling is very, very funny. The efforts of the small village Lars lives see the townsfolk adapt rather easily to the sudden marriage of man and plastic doll. If you liked it you were fooled! I figured it was going to be some lame comedy. An amazing cast and script, this film can do no wrong. We call ourselves "Dead Man's Bones".
