And it's gonna bring the world to the Second Apocalypse... But he fears what his brother Schoolmen will do: a lifetime of dreaming horrors, he knows, has made them cruel and pitiless. Following these two characters as they meet, come to realize how they fit into each other's lives and plans, and watch them play off not only each other, but the world at large (and the Holy War that is the ultimate backdrop for the whole story) is a lot of fun. All that really pushed this a touch below 4* for me was the fact that the whole book lacked the emotional content I enjoy. Cnaiür urs Skiötha is a Chieftain of the Utemot, a tribe of Scylvendi, who are feared across the Three Seas for their skill and ferocity in war. In an effort to forestall disaster, Maithanet calls a Council of Great and Lesser Names, and all the leaders of the Holy War gather in the Emperor's palace, the Andiamine Heights, to make their arguments. "The Darkness that Comes Before" tries to take aspects of "The Song of Ice and Fire" - in large part, many of the more unpleasant aspects - and surpass them. The perspectives we follow in the story are skewed in a certain direction, however. There are two women in the main cast, and both are prostitutes (one is a concubine, the other is this world's version of a call girl). Along with the characterization it reminded me of ASOIAF and Dune. Some of his dialogue is dense and definitely hard to digest especially for a simpleton like me, I had googled open the entire time while reading and also found some of his sentences forced. It seems as though the entire world is damned, certainly those who practice sorcery (the ultimate mark of human folly and pride and the greatest sin against the gods and their act of creation) and nearly every character in the novel seems to suffer under the weight of this condemnation.

Claiming to be an assassin sent to murder Moënghus, he asks the Scylvendi to join him on his quest. It always struck me that in Cnaiür we saw something along the lines of a 'true' nietzschean superman, a man with superior physical and mental skills driven by an overpowering will to overcome all obstacles and enforce this will upon the world. Now that they have safely crossed the Steppe, Cnaiür is convinced Kellhus will kill him: the Dûnyain brook no liabilities.

It rewards neither skill nor daring. No surprise given that a lot of the main characters were pretty awful people and that the story and world was reminiscent of the Crusades in the medieval period. The other big win for this book was the characters. The world of the Second Apocalypse, the Three Seas, is truly epic.

This is also an intense read. To limit and control it. But then, perhaps the other two books in the series are better and pick up the pace - at least, that's what I've read to be the case. The series was originally planned to be a trilogy, with the first two books entitled The Prince of Nothing and The Aspect-Emperor. Before he can resolve this dilemma, Achamian is summoned by the Emperor's nephew, Ikurei Conphas, to the Imperial Palace in Momemn, where the Emperor wants him to assess a highly placed adviser of his—an old man called Skeaös—for the Mark of sorcery. Richard Scott Bakker, who writes as R. Scott Bakker and as Scott Bakker, is a novelist whose work is dominated by a large series informally known as the The Second Apocalypse which Bakker began developing whilst as college in the 1980s. But she really has no choice: sooner or later, she realizes, Achamian will be called away. This is a fantasy story with a complex plot and plenty of action. That night, he watches Serwë surrender to Kellhus body and soul, and he wonders at the horror he has delivered to the Holy War. The Sranc overtake him, and after driving them away, he battles their leader, a deranged Nonman, who nearly undoes him with sorcery. Kellhus is a character very different from any I've read about in fantasy books, born into a monastic civilization, raised from an early age to use hyper-rationalism, appraisal of causes and effects and a deep philosophy of psychological motivations to bend the minds of others to his will. One thing that stood out to me was Bakker's occasional tendency to over-explain things, though I must admit that some of this may have been more the result of the fact that I already knew many of the details he reveals than any real fault in Bakker's prose.

This brutal warlord seeks to overcome his challenges and rise to the top of his kinfolk. Kellhus fanart by Quinthane. After so many years among worldborn men, Kellhus claims, Moënghus will be far too powerful for him to face alone. It is also a tale about a protagonist (not often seen), Anasûrimbor Kellhus, an anti-hero that is part warrior, part monk; part philosopher and part mystic from a land and peoples that had been largely forgotten by the rest of the world after a cataclysm two millennia past and his quest and chronicles in wresting order from the jaws of chaos. By the end, I was enjoying Bakker's fake excerpts from his world's history books and philosophical treatises more than I was enjoying his story itself. That said, of all the characters, Achamian comes out looking the best. )

In this way, they believe, they will eventually grasp what they call the Absolute, and so become true self-moving souls. The rest of the world is just a sacrifice to their god. This book and series really should have been right in my wheelhouse but I honestly just couldn't bring myself to care. It seemed to fall into a predictable pattern of long, drawn out conversations which inevitably would lead to a pivotal climax, only to break right before said climax; suddenly jumping to other matters which would only restart the cyclic dribble. Cnaiur and Kellhus make their way to Momemn to join the forces gathering for the Holy War, both with the agenda of finding Anasurimbor Moenghus. It should be pointed out the majority of the novel is centered on setting the scene for the rest of the trilogy, to situate the reader in this finely imagined world. Thinking that murdering Kellhus is as close as he'll ever come to murdering Moënghus, Cnaiür attacks him, only to be defeated.

Escaping the horde's destruction, Cnaiür returns to the pastures of the Utemot more anguished than ever. He begins writhing against his chains, speaking a tongue from Achamian's ancient dreams. But Bakker balances this raw power with Chorae, items from that ancient war that render the bearer immune to sorcery and will turn any sorcerer it touchesinto salt (talk about biblical). If he could have just turned half of those periods into commas or semi-colons, maybe I could have given this book 3 stars. To prove that he still needs him, Kellhus spares his life. But whatever we may see of the Holy War, if we exclude Xerius, our characters lay on the margins of this: Achamian, who was sent to find out about the new Shriah Maithanet, swiftly becomes part of a larger conspiracy. It is, I daresay, "grimdark" - the characters all are morally grey and you may not like all of them. After a desperate journey and pursuit through the heart of the Empire, they at last find their way to Momemn and the Holy War, where they are taken before one of the Holy War's leaders, a Conriyan Prince named Nersei Proyas. This novel, while a putative fantasy, is so remarkably well-conceived and executed that it feels more like a historical recollection of a lost world.

To secure a position of honour among the Men of the Tusk, Kellhus lies, and claims to be a Prince of Atrithau. I've read philosophy text-books, and the fiction of Satre, De Beauvoir, and others. This book just didn't do it for me.
