But each of them is stuck with obvious outer-story characterizations and laborious outer-story songs; they thus seem like placards. The problem with Side Show is that these stories can't be separated, and only one can thrive. Even the vaudeville pastiches, which ought to serve as comic relief, run out of wit before they run out of tune. For me, it's the intimate story that deserves precedence; it's far better told. Despite a clutch of new numbers, and a thorough shuffling of the old ones, the nearly through-composed score lacks texture. For that we have Emily Padgett and Erin Davie, both thrilling, to thank; stepping into the four shoes of Emily Skinner and Alice Ripley, who played Daisy and Violet in the original, they are as powerful singers and more nuanced actors. The Broadway revival of the Tony-nominated musical, starring Davie and Padgett as the Hilton Sisters, will begin previews Oct. 28 at the St. James Theatre prior to an official opening Nov. 17. But Bill Condon, the film director who conceived the revival and put it on stage, lavishes much more attention on the other. Daisy always introduces herself with a confident leaping two-note figure; Violet with a drooping triplet. I wish the rest of the show were up to that level, or up to the level of the skilled actors who play the three men: the strapping Ryan Silverman as Terry, the likable Matthew Hydzik as Buddy, the dignified David St. Louis as Jake.
