Story: Spike Jonze's debut feature film is a love story mix of comedy and fantasy. The ending is deeply unsatisfying. Whether or not you choose to see that as a good or bad thing is up to you. The wilderness where they find themselves is like the world of Where The Wild Things Are, packed with ornate decorated shelters handmade from sticks and rubbish transformed by the light and the make-believe games of the men into a beautiful idyll. It too has death and attraction on its mind. Refn's death-black vision is definitely not for everyone, but I found myself entranced by its (thematically appropriate) commitment to surface-level stylishness, and by the way it, like Swiss Army Man, charges headfirst into the realm of the grotesque and ridiculous.
