Want to read young adult romance with realism. I never really connected with any of the perspective characters. Empress of All Seasons by Emiko Jean. The settings feel authentic but also magical, again in that fairy tale way, and the little details of traditional Japanese utensils and buildings add cultural charm. We learn about the animal wife that Mari is, we learn some about the ghost yokai that Akira's mother is, and we also meet a yuki-onna, oni, kirin, kappa, and jorogumo with some amount of detail.
