This kind of ties into the third bullet point - all the bad people in this book, like the cops and the mean principal and the well-meaning, but white guilt apologist "I-have-a-diversity-checklist-in-my-back-pocket-and-that-checklist-says-I-must-be-nice-to-you-for-diversity-related-reasons" MIT representative are just hilarious stereotypes of white people being shitty in various shitty ways. Although I've never lost someone in this way, the way the character describes his grief is so real and made me cry. It shows the grief and the unity of the black community and their will to fight for what is right and at the same time move on and make something great of themselves.

I was really excited to read this book because after loving THUG, I wanted something similar to that. Sometimes people need reminding that they matter, more than they need reminding that they're alive, because sometimes being alive just isn't enough. Tyler Johnson Was Here is a story of the truth, the ugly truth we want to avoid but black people can't avoid because their safety, their freedom, and their lives are at risk because of their skin color. All the white people in this book are assholes. Being a woman of color, I also appreciated the microscopic and macroscopic attention this novel gave to its racial conflicts from the eyes of its protagonist. That they're worthy.

I mean, what it's talking about should be something that's acknowledged and talked about in society period, and Marvin often shares his feelings, I mean it's in his point of view, but he doesn't shy away from his anger, confusion or frustration. He likes "A Different World", he wants to go to MIT (at least at first), and he's a supersmart kid just trying to fit in and survive to get out of the fate that the world sees fit to box him in, particularly with a father in prison and a mother who struggles to make sure her boys don't get taken by the streets. Cut from much the same cloth as All American Boys, The Hate U Give, and Dear Martin, Tyler Johnson Was Here brings Black Lives Matter to the forefront of YA once again. I say, "Deal, " without hesitation. The thing is, those reads are never easy (and they're not supposed to be), but that's not the reason I hadn't gotten to Tyler Johnson Was Here earlier. I would agree with that assessment, but I don't think that it necessarily made the MC less relatable. At times, Jay Cole's writing in Tyler Johnson Was Here is somewhat lyrical, especially when he describes the landscape or ambiance of the setting. I thought it was weird that a 18 year old teen was into "A Different World" as much as he was too. I enjoyed the romance aspect of the book as well—though the connection was made relatively quickly, I thought that was believable given the high emotional stakes. I think that this was one of the books that I gave a high rating to because of my enjoyment and my emotional attachment to the book, instead of giving it a rating from a critical view.

Some days, when I do, I just stare at the blackness I see in the mirror hanging on my closet door. Tyler Johnson has a powerful and distinct narrative voice. And "Tyler Johnson Was Here" read like a first draft of a book. I don't know why it slipped through my fingers, but the murder of George Floyd and the protests that followed in the US and all over the world were a terrible reminder of how this is still very much the reality for Black people and people of color out there. But, it was well-written and specific in it's story telling.

It's my happy place, where I find new books read. But everything else I said last time around still stands. At times endearing, and at times, excruciating to read, it is a very important novel. I think I finished reading it in about 2 hours, which is quick for a novel of this length for me, and a big part of that is definitely to do with the pacing. Although some plot points felt contrived, readers will feel the struggle to make sense of how to deal with this issue and find peace when there is no justice. This book is the truth of so many black people out there who became a hashtag for two days and then are forgotten and never get justice. Nothing felt authentic. I personally couldn't. This book packed a punch. It all makes me so very angry, but I'm not surprised anymore. No matter which you prefer, focus on what's important here--and that is the black lives matter movement, and the validity, and importance of black lives in general. This is compared to The Hate U Give and yes, they do deal with similar topics.
