David Cronenberg's violent, brutal and extremely intelligent look into the nature of violence is nothing short of insightful, moving and at times shocking, shocking because it delivers a story so true and unflinchingly honest that turning away from the screen, turning away from the story would be near impossible. Have you watched bullying and done nothing? If there's a flaw to "A History of Violence", it's the violence inflicted by Tom (Viggo Mortensen) on his victims because the rest of the film belies any graphic novel connection. Its a difficult film - sometimes difficult films are good - great in this case. It shows the family trying desperately to forget what`s happened and returning to normal, I really liked that.

I am generally appalled by the gratuitous violence of so many films these days, yet still I found myself drawn to the flawed protagonist. What he says can also relate to the situation the two are in, in the film, and he stays in character when saying it. Highest praise has to go to Ed Harris though. When it comes to David Cronenberg when he is known for making body horror flicks about changing bodies, this one is not about that. Until the staircase sex, Mr. Cronenberg has encouraged us to look at Tom the way Edie sees him, to believe the image she has unquestioningly accepted of the good father, the loving husband, the Everyman and the hero. Can it be passed from father and son? A brilliant movie; one that makes the intelligent viewer question the place and role of violence in American society, regardless of circumstance. Just get on with it, already. The message is an important one, one that many people are afraid to ask themselves; are we naturally violent people?

The movie wants Jack to have a violent conflict but the situation he finds himself in is just too fabricated to be taken seriously. I feel like it's a script written by the Coen brothers, but they had to hand it over to a serious director who doesnt like comedy so he deleted all of the light moments from the script to make a serious thriller. The entire movie is just 90 minutes long. I found myself caring about each character and From what I understand, this movie was based on a graphic novel so it definitely has that comic book feel. Bello looks a bit shell-shocked at first but quickly realises what he`s trying to do and thankfully remains in character herself, quoting the next scripted line. The first act is almost a soap opera, and the sex scene is unnecessarily long. The mystery is explained in full, but unfortunately not all of the motivations are as clearly laid out in the story. I, obviously, did not care for it -- and no, I'm not illiterate or oblivious. Tom's mutation into a killer is surely startling. Firstly, the direction from David Cronenberg is great and as this was the first film of his I have seen, it certainly makes This one is definitely a slow burner, but the pay off is great and as a film, it is certainly something to marvel at. One hopes that this masterpiece launches more teamings of this supremely accomplished director and his new leading man. Tom catches hold of Edie at the foot of the stairs and she slaps him hard across the face. When Edie unleashes her fury with that slap she's reacting as much to Tom, the husband who has betrayed her, as to Joey, the stranger who has brought havoc into her life. The run time is rather short and doesn't offer much dialogue nor real plot progression.

Neither the script nor Viggo Mortensen gives us a clue whether Tom and Joey are the same person, or whether Tom is the victim of an unfortunate coincidence. The action in this movie was sooo slow and more comical than intense. Viggo and Bello did their best with the stilted dialogue, but William Hurt was laughably unauthentic in his role. May catch mainstream audiences, who exclusively want entertainment, off guard.
And, as Scott wrote, the story also implies some sort of genetic predisposition for violence in Jack. Although he has successfully defeated all threats to his idyllic life, has Tom Stall destroyed ultimately destroyed that life in his attempts to keep it? Here, in a simple American home, the repressed returns with a vengeance. Sure, if you just want mindless violence or cheap gags then steer clear. In a story of blood and vengeance, Mr. Cronenberg asks us to look at those who pick up guns in our name, protectors who whisper they love us with hands around our throats. They certainly are in this movie. )
Mothers, lock up your sons, the Switchblade Sisters are coming! Director David Cronenberg must have faced a bit of a dilemma when it came to casting someone in the lead role of this film. Ed Harris chose Viggo Mortensen largely on having worked with him in this movie. That's basically what it is, and it's remarkable.
