When you tried to put the trans in "P" and you heard the grinding, that was the output shafts of the trans still turning because there was nothing stopping it meaning that the cv joint/s have come off the splines of the output shaft/s. New tranny is in and installing stuff on top tonight (Water pump, Pwr steering, A/C, etc). An additional bonus is most of the axles I do slide right in by hand. Location: Minnesota. Cv Axle Going Bad
Doing fluid flushing, diagnostics, VIDA tranny resets, test driving, etc. Busted the carrier ring off, pushed out the pin from the diff, and finally had access to push instead of pull. Any long cut like that and fire hazard is a concern, but not today! Left side as mentioned above but you usually have to get it spline aligned and then pop it inward.
A clip will have to be in place. Circlip to compress enough for it to go in fully. They seem identical. Drove it for several miles at 65 mph, took several U-Turns, did some in reverse…seems to be on there for good! Did you take any fun pics like dif on the bench with a stub of axle? You can always bring the old one back after you install the new one for the core charge.
I have not tried the BFH...! Looks can be a bit deceiving sometimes and you do not have to tear everything apart to seat the inner joints. Tomorrow, gotta work again... Hopefully by late afternoon I'll be putting parts back in! Be sure and check that both sides are all the way in so it doesn't happen again. Once it is lightly tapped in by a 2x4 to 1/8" then it's just as hard getting back out. Grasp the inner joint and see if it can be moved back and forth. I'm replacing the transmission.
Also you can hit the axle in with a mini sledge hammer with a piece of wood between it if it's still being stubborn or put the axle nut on and put the socket over it and hit that. I would chuck up a big drill bit that can just fit with some tape wrapped around to make it snug then turn it say 50-60 rpm like driving slow highway speeds just to make sure it didn't get damaged from the binding and pounding. You don't have to give it to them before you order it. You cannot imagine how depressing it was using a slide hammer for hours on end with no result. A very subtle "brrrrr" and no more moving. I could see it plausibly disengaging from the spines... gonna rework the clip so it's more round before inserting. I'll have to go back and check. A lot of people skip this step but a little grease on those spring clips goes a long way towards avoiding issues like this. Oh, also, since I intend to replace the seals on either side of this thing (and the o-rings), I've heard a few people say you have to take the differential out first, but I'm trying not to. Something in the differential part of the transaxle assembly is out of whack. Last post by E Showell.
