Ah, Marcellus, I adored this grumpy, clever octopus and his story tugged at my heartstrings. I cannot remember, yet I can still taste the untamed currents of the cold open water. Tova has her "Knit-Wits, " her group of several other women her age who get together once a month and on special occasions to share their lives. She takes comfort in her routine, from meeting up with her group of friends, the Knit-Wits, to working night shift cleaning the Sowell Bay aquarium. This may be cliche, but words are not enough to express the way I feel about this novel and especially its surprise, unexpected, delightful sometimes narrator Marcellus, the giant…. I really enjoyed Remarkably Bright Creatures, and absolutely recommend it. But that was several days ago and on reflection, I believe it is worthy of a 5-star rating, my first one of 2022. This novel explores different characters who are faced with major choices: They can open themselves up to something new and take an unexpected, daring opportunity or they can continue on as they have been.

For me, it really brought a new meaning and understanding to the idea of widows and the amount of respect they deserve for having to start all over after losing a life partner. An old photo and a school ring discovered in her mom's junk will have him go to Washington in search of his potential father. I know this from the plaque on the wall beside my enclosure. I have never read a book with an older narrator like this and I wasn't sure how I would like it.
