There are plenty of unsavoury characters that Joe has to contend with, many hiding secrets and having agendas of their own, and C. J Tudor's wonderfully descriptive writing bings them to life. The way the author describes the village of Arnhill I am not sure it would be on anyone's holiday destination list. When Joe Thorne was 15, his 8 year old sister, Annie, went missing. Where his eight year old sister Annie disappeared for forty-eight hours - and then she came back. 1992 was the year when life took a very sinister turn for Joe Thorne and his family.

The Taking of Annie Thorne is a tense thriller that gave me a serious case of the heebie jeebies. Really enjoyed this book. However, 48 hours later, Annie came back, but different. Don't expect this to be something it doesn't claim to be and you have found yourself one of the best horror stories of 2019! I found it fascinating and revolting. There's a small nod to The Chalk Man included too which just like the aforementioned The A-Team nod had me grinning away at its inclusion. She has her own style and she is comfortable with it. With any mystery or thriller, one of the greatest aspects of this kind of narrative is the characters and their backstory. Joe Thorne makes the journey back to his home town, Arnhill, for a job interview at the local school, the school Joe himself used to attend. The book is told from Joe Thorne's POV and whilst most of the chapters are set in the present there are a few that are set in 1992 and show you exactly what happened that year. It doesn't take long for Joe to realise that Hurst is still the bully he has always been, and that his tenure at the academy is likely to be short-lived.

Joe has an addictive personality, he has troubles with gambling and alcohol that are ruling his life damaging his judgement and putting him in danger. I think the biggest problem with this book was that it started off in one direction but then ended up going off in a completely different direction. I think the way that the author is able to portray this suspense is key to the story. Brilliantly unsettling, and rich with horror, it is great to see C. Tudor grapple with more supernatural elements in her writing and she proves herself not to be a one-trick pony, and a wonderful new talent in British Horror Fiction. It is totally spine chilling I loved the story line and the writing style. But the school is in difficulty and with a shortage of suitable candidates, Joe is offered a teaching position with immediate effect.

My giddy aunt – do not annoy this author, she will write you into one of her stories and make you suffer. If you are concerned that juggling both at the same time is confusing, I can assure you, I didn't find this to be the case at all. This is the second book from this author that I have read and I'm looking forward to her next book. You can't see yourself in their shoes.
