But once that kiss happened I knew that's what we all wanted this whole time. And I love the rituals between Rufus and his friends, the Plutos. I think about all the young boys grappling their sexuality and reading this book and seeing themselves in it, and that means a lot for such a marginalized and underrepresented group. Mateo and Rufus each get that call and are facing their last day without a loved one. But of course there's a catch. Others are worth every risk.

Silvera knew writing was his future and crafted his own education rather than attend college. Whether this is good or bad is up for discussion and we readers are encouraged to give it some serious thought. I loved the concept of the story, but I didn't like the execution so much. The more books he found with characters in whom he saw parts of himself, the more he liked to read. Rufus and Mateo discuss what they think happens after death, whether there's an afterlife. This is what happened to Mateo and Rufus. The Last Friend app is designed for those on their last days, called Deckers, to meet with other Deckers or just friendly strangers so that they don't have to die alone. But when the first round of End Day calls goes out, their lives are changed forever—one of them receives a call, and the other doesn't. Due to unfortunate circumstances, neither of them have loved ones to spend their last day with. He was a gay Latino from New York City's South Bronx, and it was "the first time that I got exposed to a gay character in a fantasy novel or even in any book, period. It was chalk full of unnecessary details, and the discussions of the death were all repetitive and shallow to the point where I was rolling my eyes.

Normally, I'm not a big fan of books that have super insignificant characters as an additional perspective, but I think it worked really well for this book.
