It was stunning views of Hole in the Wall, Thunderbird Mountain, Brown's Pass, and Bowman Lake for the first few hours, and the rest of the hike went through dense shrubs and forest, with a couple of (dried up) river crossings.

It still ranks as one of my all time favorites. Shoulders and hips are rubbed raw by straps, joints ache, blisters form on feet. I am so lucky to say that I have backpacked in Glacier National Park, and to Hole in the Wall of all places. You will also need to cross a sizeable wooden suspension bridge, which traverses the Kintla River. This is where the majesty of Glacier really hit us. But when we got in the hammocks later that night, the 7" tree CRACKED at the base and tipped, and suddenly my butt was on the ground. This amazing waterfall is one of the most awe-inspiring of all the hundreds of waterfalls in Glacier National Park, and there is no better view of this great waterfall than from the trail leading up to Brown Pass. Thus began a 3rd day's hike another 1000ft up to Boulder Pass, and then 3000ft down to Upper Kintla Lake. There are a lot of cliffs to look up at and down at! Across Bowman Lake to the south you will enjoy views of Square Peak, Rainbow Peak and Mount Carter as you hike your way to the head of the lake. It was casual and relaxing, and the views were unbelievable. Besides the view, if you are into rocks, the geology at Boulder Pass is amazing... -robin. The bear minded its own business, scooting up off the trail and up the hill away from the woods with astounding quickness. This is the last section before you top out on Boulder Pass. Seriously, the whole time we were backpacking we couldn't believe how stunning the whole area was. Especially with our 16' straps, we had no shortage of options. Soon enough the dense trees will fall away and you will be out in a more meadow-y landscape. From Boulder Pass, you start heading down through floral meadows with magnificent views at the Agassiz Glacier on Kintla Peak and its neighbors. 6 miles from Hole In The Wall Backcountry Campground! This campground has a really nice spot to make lunch, filter water and go to the bathroom.

The tamarack (larch) trees were turning golden up at that elevation (7400ft) and it was so beautiful. The next day we had about 11 miles and over 3, 200 feet of elevation to gain… numbers that sounded intimidating, but didn't mean much to us yet. With little exception, you'll be doing a lot of hiking around Hole-in-the-Wall Falls, Montana, unless you've got a few strong men carrying you around Glacier (And in that case, enjoy! On our exposed side you could see the peaks of Kinnerly and Kintla Mountains, each coated by a massive glacier that ran down and fed the lakes below. We were fortunate in that we found another group that was hiking the opposite way starting a few days later, so we came off the trail at Kintla, drove their vehicle to Bowman for them to have at the end of their trip and picked up our car at Bowman where it had stayed during our journey. Cross the rock slab and a small gurgling stream (your water source at camp) for about another 5 minutes until you reach the campground. We took a break at Upper Kintla Lake, and then headed 6 more miles to Boulder Pass where we would stay the night. This is a view to the south from Hole In Wall in Glacier National Park. This hike to the Bowman Lake Campground (Head) is relatively flat, and provides not only great views of Bowman Lake but also of Square Peak, Rainbow Peak and Mount Carter. Part of the issue was that we were hanging a little flatter than desireable given the distance between the trees, but that spot just worked best with a ground dweller with us too.

Through the windshield we could see the rocky mountains rising up from the level fields in staggering relief. Right in front of that mountain is a small copse of pine trees - this is the campground. Or knows of better transportation options inside the park; shuttle isn't running but even if it was, there apparently isn't one on the North Fork area?
