At about 350 pages, I think this is a book that anybody could pick up at any given time. In particular I loved sardonic Joe, psychotic Gloria and laid back Brendan. It's full of atmosphere and mystery, and with the creepy Arnhill pit at the centre of the story, and the cottage, it was hard to read late at night. To go along with the present day storyline there is also a past storyline taking place in 1992 and detailing the events that led up to Annie going missing and her return. He also doesn't help his cause by sticking his nose into things that certain people want to keep hidden. But as Joe journeyed into his teenage years he gravitated toward a bunch of misfits, a group of teenagers who were up for adventure and trouble, leading Joe down a very dark path indeed. Thriller mixed with a little horror, this story takes the reader down a dark and eerie path; this was just the right amount of scary to spook the reader and to keep them on the edge of their seat. And then she came back. "The Taking of Annie Thorne" is so much more than a compelling story – it's a cunning and slippery journey into the unknown. I like reading a narrative and having to consider whether whatever has happened is true, or whether the perspective is biased or not. The book is just so well written and the story so well executed with Tudor bringing her characters, her setting and her story all to life. While Tudor excels in cultivating that 'edge of your seat' tension throughout the book, it was the brief sparks of action where when I found myself leaving finger-shaped indentations on the edge of my Kindle. So, let's start at the beginning, the prologue is incredibly gripping and one that sets the tone well for the rest of the book. Well paced and perfectly plotted with a time line that goes back and forth, but not excessively. His sister went missing all those years ago, she returned the day after, but she was never the same and Joe has been suppressing the memories of what really took place. CJ Tudor takes the reader on a thrilling, dark and creepy journey as the story of what did happen to Annie Thorne is revealed…well kind of!

The supernatural element that flows throughout the book is also very well handled. It was probably a terrible idea to start this book right in the middle of a really busy couple of weeks in university. Combining "old school" horror (there's dolls, there's beetles, there's graveyards, there's witchery) with the twistiest twists, macabre backdrop and many, many secrets. He comes back to his little hometown because of several reasons, and that is where history starts to repeat itself. I really liked the characters and the descriptions of his home town. I apologise that this review is rather vague on the whole but the nature of a mystery is, well, just that, and it wouldn't be very mysterious if I start dishing out the spoilers. The chapters are also not too long, so nothing too chunky happens all at once and we then forget the events of the other timeline.
