She doesn't shy away from the big topics, but highlights them a really natural way so you never feel preached too, but you completely understand the message she is trying to get across. 25 stars for me is that I found the middle of the story to drag on just a little too much for me. Karina lost everything after a violent coup left her without her kingdom or her throne. Really didn't enjoy the pronunciation of one of the female voices head=had dat=debt etc. A terrible ringing filled her ears as she opened her mouth to call out to Mama and took in a mouthful of acrid heat instead. I loved koffi even more in this book! Ekon spent his entire time trying to get to Koffi while she spent the entire time trying to get out of where she was. As punishment, she is stripped of her powers and trapped in a mortal's body. Nevertheless, I did enjoy learning more about Koffi, her family, and Ekon. Ayana Gray's new YA book trilogy combines 'monsters, mythos, and #BlackGirlMagic'. Ekon still manages his anxiety and OCD pretty well, but he does struggle at times and I liked the way it was portrayed. Of course a cliff hanger ending one I was not expecting. Koffi and Ekon form a tentative alliance and together enter the Greater Jungle, a world steeped in wild, frightening magic and untold dangers. The characters and world building continue to be great, but the plot was plodding and it felt like a completely different book than the first entry.
