The plot of the book is very familiar. Khamsin and Wynter fall in love slowly but surely, and trust me, all 600 pages of this book is SO WORTH IT, if only to follow the romance. Like most romantic troupes, it would have been so easy to make Khamsin a damsel in distress, but every time she seems to fall into that troupe, she shows — with shining colors — that she is most definitely not that type of heroin. She was easy to like as she was headstrong and fierce, plus she never whines. Sadly, however, this is not the case. It fell somewhere on the spectrum between the mostly light and fluffy Warprize and the dark and delicious The Golden Dynasty. I will be checking out the author's other novels in the future. I had the hardest time getting into this book. Wyn is losing the capacity to love—to feel anything. I liked her and now I LOVE her. I started off loving the book, but the last third I had to push through because the gimkick of twists was not enjoyable anymore. The bleak pattern goes on and she catches the eye of a powerful faerie. That was really neat. I can't remember the last time I did an individual book review. Eventually this turns to love, but not until the literal end of the story and without any substantial development beyond the writer saying so. This started out so strong and I was enjoying the plot, all because of the forced marriage trope tho, but then it started dragging and things were just so repetitive.
