Without putting too fine a point on it, I'd hoped for a story that spoke to the survivor experience, and the advocacy roles Madeleine and her contemporaries stepped into following the disaster. Followed by intimate excursions, driving along the coast and picnicking on small hidden beach by the sea. Madeleine Force Astor was, in the end, simply a young woman of her time and place, born into moderate wealth, raised to be clever and attractive and to have no ambitions beyond marrying well and raising a family of her own. While Abé admits there isn't a lot of information available about Madeleine, I appreciate how Abé did her research among the wealth of information about the Titanic, as well as the Astor family, and worked to fill in the gaps from there. I was anxious to get to the part on the Titanic and was well pleased with the description of the ship and the awful events surrounding the sinking. Ms. Abe did a fabulous job bringing to life Ms. Madeleine Force and shedding light on her star-crossed pairing with "Jack" Astor. But I think Madeleine was a hero. As others have stated in some of their reviews, my favorite character was probably Jack's Airedale terrier "Kitty".
This made it difficult for me to buy into the romance of the story. Kensington Books and provided the copy I read for this review. I recommend this book to historical fiction readers, to those who enjoy stories of women who defy the conventions of their time and to those interested in the tragedy that was the Titanic. As interested as I was in the novel, I knew very little of this couple besides the fact that they were on the Titanic. A great love story yet a horrible death. After all, she was only 18 when she married and was widowed within a few months, and she was then one of the wealthiest women in the world (with a stepson who allegedly blamed her for his father's death and a stepdaughter she only met at her husband's funeral. And why should she be? Then it came up and was voted for in a buddy group with which I'm privileged to be associated. I confess I was intrigued by this novel because I remember the scene from the movie where Rose tells Jack the tidbit about both Colonel Astor and his younger wife.

This was audio for me, so right off the bat, the narrator bugged. The couple plans to return home in the spring of 1912, aboard an opulent new ocean liner. Finally, a historical fiction book about the Titanic that didn't disappoint! Madeleine feels truly alive for the first time—and is happily pregnant. But it was never melodramatic.
In the middle of the story I decided to research the book and it was then I found out the book was about the Astor's who were aboard the Titanic. John Jacob Astor, scion of the Astor fortune falls in love with an 18 year-old when he is 47 and the pair marry (his second marriage, her first). With more space and performance, used sedan cars in Mumbai are the perfect upgrade choice for many. I felt like I was there in the story watching the scenes all play out right before me. Great character development made the story very special. There is some profanity, few and far between amongst the pages.
