This is because two years before Fyredel awoke and took over the Yscalin King meaning the dragon runs the country and the Donmata is trapped within her own kingdom and when her father dies she knows Fyredel will be coming for her. Though I cannot recommend both books enough. The characters in these books, however, are openly and unabashedly queer. She wants to return to the south but the Prioress is sending her away on another mission that might last years and would take her in the opposite direction and she realises that the Prioress is only looking out for herself and no one else. Despite the fantastical and magical elements though, this is a story that's (strangely) very much grounded in reality. I had no problem with the pace picking up as the book went on, but it sped up so much that it felt like there wasn't quite enough time to do justice to the big finale at the end. I particularly loved Ead and Tané's journeys. And the things that say to and about each other… I'm clutching my chest.

I am such a huge fan of authors twisting fairy tales, and the book gives more depth to the story and the original characters. We are now entering the final part of the novel and I am looking forward to the face off between the united armies and the Nameless One. There is a lot of political intrigue from the very beginning as we learn many people want to marry Queen Sabran but she has always turned them down despite being heirless and nearly 30. From trans monks to lesbian orcs to bisexual princesses, the sexualities of these characters inform, but don't overwhelm, their stories.
