Nathan Morris: I fully support a parent's right to decide what school placement is best for their children and their future. Sheryl Picard: As a priority, the district needs to have a curriculum that isn't integrated with political agendas. We need to use these ARPA funds to recovering learning losses encountered from the board's reaction to the pandemic. Staff shortages We need to push for adequate funding to support all programs and students, particularly fully funding special education programs while we grow our district enrollment and recruit/hire/retain high quality staff. We need to acknowledge and respect all students for who they are while providing them with the best educational experience that will prepare them for the next phase of their lives. We need to hire more teachers so we can shrink the classroom size and offer a higher quality education experience to our students and families. We graduate about 1, 500 students each year, but have about 1, 200 new students being enrolled (gap of about 300 students each year). The current board has done the opposite, and many families have left as a result. I have a business degree and have studied nursing, emergency management and child development. Ostertag first ran for a partial term on the school board during the 2020 election, coming within eight percentage points of winning the election. I've been asking hard questions and working collaboratively with parents, students, educators and the administration to help students achieve their highest potential.

October 7 – Sumedha Sethi speams with Jeannie Moody-Novak and Shawn Wilson. Another opportunity of growth is to connect with families who left or never enrolled into the district. LaRonda Chastang, the incumbent P-CCS Board of Education Vice President, is up for election for a full six-year term. Parents and teachers with students who have challenges understand, but others don't. I hope to continue moving our district forward with improving student achievement and well-being for all students. Additionally, the district must assure parents that they are valued partners in the education of their children and must be transparent and responsive to parents concerns about safety and access to resources for their children. Michigan law, Act 451 of 1976, states under the revised school code, "It is the natural, fundamental right of parents and legal guardians to determine the direct care, teaching and education of their children". What should the school district's priorities be coming out of the COVID-19 pandemic, including how it spends ARPA funds? Test scores have been dropping since long before Covid and enrollment is down. The district has implemented a number programs like SEL and advisory times and townhalls that can foster an environment where students better understand and respect each other. Judith Westra: Overall, I am happy with the direction of the district, however I am aware that some of groups of students are not being well served. There is an Albert Einstein quote that states "We cannot solve problems using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them. " Getting help for those who need it most shouldn't be so hard. If elected, I will work with my fellow board members to ensure that recent educational, equity and safety policies are continued and expanded. Chastang is running to "continue working to advance the mission of our district, ensure strong, safe schools that are families' first choice for education and to improve relationships between families, school and the community. Additionally, having lived diverse experiences, I provide a unique voice advocating for all kids while supporting and holding the administration accountable. Westra stated that she is passionate about public education and the benefits it provides to the community, state and nation and that our schools and families deserve the best education that can be provided. I have excellent data interpretation abilities and I think outside of the box. In our district we host community forums to receive real time feedback from parents, students, and community members.

School boards set overall policy for the school district, as well as hire and manage the superintendent, who oversees day-to-day operations in the school district. Nathan Morris: Since 2016 3rd grade reading and writing proficiency has been getting worse year after year. I am willing to give my time to do whatever I can to help every student succeed in whichever path they take. Chastang stated that she believes that she provides a unique voice on the P-CCS School Board and that she understands that service on the board requires balancing the success of all students, ensuring that the administration remains accountable to the board and the community and seeking input from students, teachers and the community alike. The board has five main functions: Goal setting (district vision with short & long-term goals); Setting policy; Hiring/evaluating superintendent; Budget review, approval, & allocating resources based on district goals (including facilities & contracts); Approve curriculum based on district goals, state requirements/standards, & student achievement data. She has an undergraduate degree from Michigan State University and a Masters from the University of Michigan. The school system's responsibility is to promote a culture of mutual respect and personal responsibility across all points of view, to enable students to focus on their studies. The goal for academic excellence has changed along with the curriculum which now integrates political agendas and ideologies.

Judith Westra is an information technology professional with a degree from the University of Maryland and experience in leading large projects and collaborating between diverse groups.
