This was a very personal story, and I recommend it to anyone looking for a realistic, emotional book about struggling through racism and police brutality. You're not fooling anyone with your 'men are all created equal' because it looks like you don't believe in your own Constitution. Marvin was a Blerd, a Black nerd, and he was "meh". I am back with another review, today it is Tyler Johnson Was Here by Jay Coles. I am happy to rate this book four stars, because it was thought-provoking and told a truly important story. But someone is watching, and Pip may be in more danger than she realizes. I picked this book up because I felt like I've been reading a lot of fantasy novels lately. Now after all this, you may be wondering "if this seemed like a 4-star-read based on how you described it, why did you give this book 5 stars? I didn't get much of a sense of who Tyler was, whereas the main character in THUG all but leaped from the pages. I don't know the word ohgosh... publicity? Even secondary characters are well-rounded, with their own histories and 's not much plot here, but readers will relish the opportunity to climb inside Autumn's head. He makes bad choices, hangs out with the wrong people (Johntae, in particular, reeks of so much toxic masculinity. ) Perhaps it's true, and the flood of outrage, grief, and protesting isn't falling on deaf ears, and so the Tyler Johnsons of real life can finally rest in peace. Overall, this book was a nice read and I give it 3.

I love Marvin's best friends. This book showed the other side of the story, it made me realize how normal these tragedies are occurring and how little is being done about it. I love the flowers and the softness of the black boy. 5 Although this book was extremely enjoyable and fast paced, it felt a little disjointed and too fast paced for me. Because you pretty much know that Tyler dies at some point thanks to the description, you're waiting for that moment while reading the book. I loved what this book was trying to do, and even if it didn't quite succeed, the publication of books like THE HATE U GIVE and TYLER JOHNSON WAS HERE not only gives the Black Lives Matter movement more exposure, it puts books featuring kids of color into the hands of actual kids of color with stories that they can relate to (whether in a good or bad way). This is an important story that brings to light the impact on families that have lost someone by those that are sworn to protect. I'd give "Tyler Johnson Was Here" a solid 4 stars, notably because I connected with the read on some personal levels and because it does manage to do well by delving into issues of cultural pride and identity, police brutality, the current events and social climate surrounding Black Lives Matter, and the struggle for recognition/fight against dehumanization so often noted and experienced in the African-American community. His being a fanboy - specifically, of A Different World, and building on that, his application to Howard University (the other big roll call in this book, other than the names of police brutality victims with Tyler Johnson included, being famous Howard alumni like Taraji P. Henson. ) After reminding myself that I matter, that I've always mattered, that Tyler mattered and still does, I make a promise to myself. Unfortunately, after a night at a party, Tyler goes missing, only for Marvin and his family to learn later that Tyler was murdered by a white policeman. Social media, as in real life, plays a vital part in the advocacy for victims' rights at the hands of police, as well as for the efforts needed to organize public protests and vigils in memory of Tyler. Jay Coles strips away barriers, forcing you to see, feel, hear the pain of loss and to comprehend how utterly senseless violence is. I have no issue with a contemporary novel mentioning pop culture references and name brands.

There just seemed to be no thought to these characters except to be there to listen to Marvin. I was incredibly frustrated when he started pushing them away, but I am glad they remained loyal to him throughout the book. He shows a good bit of character growth up to the final points of the novel, though I honestly wish that the novel could've given more closure to certain plot points pertinent to the novel's events (I would've liked to have seen the family get the justice they deserved, and even Marvin start his foot off in his new college life. ) I'm not sure I really needed his and Faith's romantic relationship in the book, but I did appreciate how it added to his recovery after the situation with his brother. Marvin apparently is a straight A student and practically aced his SATs. This is an amazing, powerful story. I really liked how Marvin's character developed throughout the story, he realized a lot about himself that he didn't before and even though it was a result of a horrible tragedy, he was able to, at least partly, piece his life back together.

I will preface this review by saying that I'm white and my privilege has made it's so that I've never encountered a situation like those portrayed in the novel. Charla h, Librarian. The writing is stunning - I highlighted a bunch of different passages that I loved, and I thoroughly appreciated that the story included letters from Marvin's imprisoned father. I feel like this is illegal that a principal could cancel your interview with a school. I felt like every single character was a cardboard cut-out of some stereotype, from the poor, single mother of two boys to the high school drug-running gang hanger-onner, to the wise and hot girlfriend, to the clueless principal, to the super well-meaning wannabe ally white lady teacher, to the main character and his default other main character twin. But yeah nope, it just didn't cut it for me. Jay Coles is a MG and YA author. Readers will get to know each character, in an intimate way, allowing for a deeper, more intimate connection with the author, the characters and themselves. It explores the nuanced nature of innocence, the right way to protest, and when violence and anger are justified. The writing style of this book was great.

I wanted to like this as much as The Hate U Give but it just bothered me a touch. I promise that I'll never be silent about things that matter, that I'll keep on saying his name for the rest of my days.
