While we fly, lodge grounds are closed off for safety reasons. Have all the gear necessary for making a safe traverse of the mountain, and also consider a plan B for reaching the summit if the Park decides to close US 441 for visitor safety. It is indeed a sad day for all you snow lovers out there. I kept myself busy by making fresh prints in the snow along the Boulevard, staring at icicles and throwing snowballs at trees. These sturdy pieces of history have withstood torrential downpours, high winds, hurricanes, and thieving squirrels. Our current snow depth is 4". The moon watched over us the whole way, lighting the path with ease. After that, visitors should once again have access to the long Brushy Mountain Trail out of Porters Creek. What I didn't expect to experience on the mountain was the incredible community that cherishes this geological formation. Another Winter Weather Advisory goes into effect this evening, so it's entirely possible the road may be closed again. If you have a bee allergy, it would be wise to bring an epipen with you if you hike up (not that we've had any stings to date as far as I know). Saturday's high was 37 with a low of 30. The temperatures are staying on the cool side. My love for the outdoors helped make that decision quite easy.
