But in Grossman's hands it is just one more nail in the coffin, taking an eminently worthwhile premise(adult Harry Potter, twisted Narnia) and magically transforming it through bad craft into utter shit. It seems to be somewhat of an if-then-else statement, though it's possible the world seed could be used in an entirely different manner, such as creating a door for Penny and Plum to get back home. Thankfully, the pervert ghost that Penny 40 encountered when he was forcefully left with only an astral body, still exists in Brakebills. His childhood dream becomes a nightmare with a shocking truth at its heart. I thought the writing was superb, the characters were three dimensional and very well developed and the world-building was amazing, especially in regards to how the fantastic was made to seem so real. They can do everything. The old riff of a nobody becoming somebody is done well here, even though it's crouched in dry, clinical and mechanistic terms that undermine its effectiveness. Margo, who could have easily been written off as the tired trope of a mean girl with anger issues, was given space and nuance to exist as a powerful woman fighting to endure in worlds that did not want her. When I started watching the SYFY version of The Magicians and actually really liked it, I made a quick mental note to go back and read this book first before I got too far into it. There's nothing wrong with fantasy, not everything has to be high lit.
