He worked to link these two streams because, in his time, the oral was so much stronger than the written in the local cultural picture; and because his work on the language of Newfoundland led him to believe that they were not dichotomous but part of a continuum. Kinslow clearly felt there was a "right way" to sing this song; when she did it for Peacock the first day she sang "A" after "B" and again at the end; the next day she recalled "C" and put it where she had had "A.
