Odelle discovers another clue to the real story of 'Ruffina and the Lion'. Odelle's prickly exterior hides uncertainty about her talent and her place in London society. Full review to come, but i wanted to get that out there now for people like me (although with better spines, hopefully) who may not feel drawn to this book by the synopsis alone. You know how I know? Thanks to Ecco/HarperCollins and Edelweiss. 'The Muse' is in many ways an interesting and engaging book. It was a cineclub and after the screenings we would have discussions. Had they looked up even for a moment they could have seen the ships, the kings, the armies, the big tragedy waiting to overtake them. There's little else I can say about the plot of this book without giving something important away. But, everyone singles out Odelle as this special girl in their lives for no reason. I really enjoyed Jessie Burton's first novel, The Miniaturist, but I absolutely adored The Muse. "Do you have a body if no one is there to touch it? Turns out from the acknowledgements at the end of the book that the author got aid from a professor to write the accent as accurately as possible. Doesn't it take years to polish your skill?

Human drama meets historical madness. I immensely enjoyed reading Odelle's story. It's a blessing I found a place. Misguided Ways We Often Treat Our Muses. That's one really cool aspect of being a writer, though. I learned that it had been a loose baggy monster and that someone had finally shot it up. She either speaks like this naturally or she doesn't, but the constant switching doesn't make much sense. Both Olive and Odelle hide their work from most people. For there she meets the glamorous and enigmatic Marjorie Quick, who soon takes Odelle into her confidence and encourages her to pursue her dream of writing. Seven years old, and she was the only one who ever told me to keep going. While I do think that Jessie Burton's stories, "The Muse" included, have some superficial faults with them, I appreciated "The Muse" a lot for its simplicity and beauty, and I'm so happy that I continued on with reading Jessie Burton because this reading experience was one that I wouldn't want to be without. But I will leave this promising story for others to finish. I was invested in the mystery and needed to follow it through to the conclusion. In a nutshell, this ardent yet poignant book will arrest the minds of the readers that it won't let them look away from its elegance, beauty and pain.

There has been a lot of hype surrounding this book because of the former, and I got to ignore all of that and come at my review with fresh eyes and a fresh perspective. What wealth I have is measured in the tin scale of irony. Alas, it was a cliché moment when I judged a book by its cover. I was the only one who'd ever been willing to find out Quick's true story. If you are establishing your career by traditional or indie publishing, by all means, it's very sound advice.

And the more I left it in the air it turned even darker. I won't quibble too much about copulation, but the word is not specific enough. I believe the author could've done a better job to make it more interesting and fit for a novel. Some info on muses, just for the heck of it.

That being said, the book has merit, especially for people who appreciate the theory of art or are artists themselves.
